What would you do in this case?

we have inherited a house that is very much in need of decorating. our bathroom looks very old and worn, we do not have the money yet to replace it, my idea was to give the walls a lick of paint and a wallpaper border, put in a cheap floor, get a new bright shower curtain and some bathroom accessories but keep the old fashioned bathroom suite but my partner thinks we should just leave it until we can afford a new bathroom (in a year or 2) i think we should improve the appearence but he thinks we should leave it how it is (horrible)... am i right to make the most of what we've got?
