What is the point of putting a rear spoiler on a front-wheel drive car?

With RWD, the purpose of the spoiler is obvious. On Jim Hall's Chevy-Chaparral, the rear wing was connected directly to the rear suspension, rather than the bodywork, to maximize the power that the rear wheels could handle.
