How do I deal with my BF's explosive anger?

I need some help...I don't know what to do when my bf has a meltdown and starts shouting expetives and threatens to hit things when he gets mad. It affects me to the point where I am embarrassed by his behavior as we live in a basement suite and our landlords live upstairs. I have also tried to commit suicide because of his behavior. I don't know what to do to stop his explosive anger episodes. Please if someone could offer some advice as to what I can do...I would really appreciate it.
